Restore iron stores. Understand the cause.

Iron infusions replenish deficient iron stores and can support recovery from iron-deficiency anemia when appropriate. Iron helps your body make hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in red blood cells. Your care also considers why iron is low, including possible blood loss or poor absorption.

Is IV iron right for you?

IV iron may be considered when iron deficiency is confirmed and oral iron is unsuitable, poorly tolerated, or has not worked well enough. Symptoms alone do not establish eligibility. Consultation, laboratory assessment, and clinician approval are required before treatment.

What the evaluation considers

01

Your symptoms and history

Discuss fatigue, changes in exercise tolerance, heavy menstrual bleeding, digestive conditions, and any previous reaction to iron treatment. Bring your medication list and recent laboratory reports.

02

Your blood count and iron studies

Review your blood count, ferritin, and other iron studies with your clinician to understand your iron status and whether more testing is needed.

03

Your treatment and follow-up

Discuss oral iron, IV iron, or other next steps. If infusions are prescribed, your plan sets the dosing, schedule, monitoring, and follow-up.

Could iron be part of the picture?

Fatigue, stamina, and concentration

Persistent fatigue, reduced stamina, and difficulty concentrating can occur with iron-deficiency anemia. Tell your clinician when these changes began and how they affect your daily life.

Heavy periods are worth discussing

Heavy menstrual bleeding can increase the risk of iron deficiency. Discuss your bleeding pattern so care can address both your iron status and the cause of ongoing iron loss.

A normal CBC does not tell the whole iron story

Iron stores can be depleted while hemoglobin remains normal. Iron-deficiency anemia develops when insufficient iron leads to low hemoglobin. A normal complete blood count (CBC) therefore does not rule out low iron stores. Ferritin and, when appropriate, transferrin saturation help clarify the picture. Inflammation can raise ferritin, so results need clinical interpretation.

Restless nights can be part of the conversation

Restless legs syndrome can disrupt falling asleep or staying asleep, and iron testing may be part of its assessment. This association does not establish that an iron infusion will improve sleep or restless legs.

Symptoms more closely associated with anemia

Breathlessness, palpitations, and unusually pale skin can occur with anemia. They are not specific to iron deficiency and do not establish low ferritin without anemia.

Persistent ice or non-food cravings

Persistent cravings to chew ice or eat non-food items such as paper or clay, sometimes called pica, can occur with iron-deficiency anemia. Mention them during your consultation.

Risks and expectations

IV iron can cause infusion reactions, including serious allergic reactions. Your clinician will discuss the relevant risks and appropriate monitoring. The response to treatment and time needed for improvement vary; relief of a particular symptom, faster recovery, and hair or skin benefits are not guaranteed.
